The Soldier's Effigy

The Soldier's Effigy
by Robert Paul Gass
The unacknowledged Greek Achilles killed
The lowly Hector disemboweled lost
To annals after arrow pierced and filled
His heel with pain beneath the walls as cost.
The unacknowledged Trojan never left
The Cape as Venus apathetic sought
The captives' souls beneath her lust bereft
Of pity seeking captors, casting lot.
Orestes' father safe in Greece received
The news of conquest over Troy and knew
Of little time with Clytemnestra grieved
About her cycle gone to beast as two.
The legends try in vain to lure the horde,
Duress or mind control affixing cord.
